Tramping Recipes This makes no claim to be a definitive recipe book, just a few ideas that make life that much more enjoyable when marching on one's stomach. The emphasis is on food that is prepared ahead of time and dried with a 5-6 day walk in mind - e.g, the Heaphy, the St James, etc. If it's an overnighter I'm happy to carry in a couple of steaks or some fresh vegetables. Given that I do not have to live off it for weeks and weeks, I tend to use mince (ground beef or chicken) as a staple for pre-cooked food over a weekend or several days. I've tried using finely sliced beef or chicken but, with the best care, they remain somewhat leathery on reconstituting, though the taste is still quite agreeable. |
